Sports - The Emergence of Media Channels from Sports Leagues and Properties
In the past decade, most if not all of the major sports leagues have started expanding vertically, forgoing traditional rights fees in favor of developing their own networks and content distribution methods. Some have been met with critical success, while others are still searching for a foothold. Challenges/issues along the way have included negotiating with cable systems for placement on basic cable or PPV tiers; balancing relationships with existing media rightsholders; and deciding over what formats (especially online and wireless) these rightsholders have control. This panel will explore the lessons learned from these ventures, and what challenges are still facing those currently under development.
